Our Sonora Stories

OUR TEAM

The Sonora team is a unique and diverse group of people. As different as we are, one thing we share is our collective love of footwear. Together all of our individual lifestyles, personalities and regional influences are expressed throughout every facet of the Sonora collection.

From Country Radio to Western Boots

Prior to working for Sonora, I spent 10 years in FM radio, where I had a great time on the air, writing and producing commercials, attending concerts, meeting famous musicians and interacting with our station’s fans, but I still felt the need for something more. When I first started working for our brother division, Carolina Shoe, I educated retail employees on the features and benefits of work boots, helping them to better service their customers. It turned out that the stores I serviced were also stores that I grew up in, as my father has worked in retail footwear for decades, so it was not long before I hoped for a new experience. From afar, I admired a different side of our business – the Western industry. The women who worked here intrigued me, as it looked like they were always so carefree and having fun! As a girl from the East Coast, I may have been a little jealous of all their flair! I wondered constantly how we could all be so similar, but had vastly different lifestyles and experiences. Soon, I had the opportunity to join Sonora – a new brand for women that originally was part of Double-H boots, a brand whose sales force was comprised predominantly of men. We decided to re-launch Sonora as its own entity in the Fall of 2012 with a motto of “for women, by women.” We worked on the styling of the product, the Oasis comfort system, box designs, planning our retail outlets, and so much more in the months prior to the official re-launch. Since our first season, we have grown tremendously! Now I have the best of both worlds – I get to travel and see the country, I’m challenged on a daily basis and I get to work with a creative, motivated and diverse team of incredible individuals.

I started with the H.H. Brown Work and Outdoor Group a little over 10 years ago and I can honestly say this is the best company I have ever worked for. In 2003, I began as a representative for Double-H, servicing stores until 2008, when I moved into a position that challenged me to learn about the numbers side of the business and what it takes to run a Western boot company. Then we launched Sonora. Since the beginning, I have enjoyed working with the team and learning all the different aspects of a Western fashion boot line. We have laughed, cried, been frustrated and elated from time to time, but working with the people I do and all the support we have has made it all worthwhile. I also continue to work with the Double-H brand in several different areas of business. Being a single mom of a 9-year-old girl also keeps me busy when I’m not working.

I was hired by HH Brown straight out of college, where I graduated with a BFA in Industrial Design from SCAD – go bees! I was originally planning on studying fashion, but I couldn’t resist the allure of the woodshop, welding area, and 3D printers in the Industrial Design building. I knew that if I studied fashion design, I could never feel right producing clothing that was just going to be out of style in a few months. One of the reasons I love Sonora is because our boots are meant to stand the test of time. I’m passionate about environmental sustainability and I’m always looking for new ways to incorporate this passion into my job as a designer.

I feel truly honored to design for this brand and to work with such an incredible team! There’s a lot that goes on behind the scenes that makes Sonora the brand that it is. It’s not an act – everyone at Sonora really is as kind and fun as they seem.

Being from the West, I am familiar with Western fashion for the ladies in the Montana, Wyoming and Colorado area. There are many workwear styles available in the market for ladies, but to assist in creating a fashion boot for them – one that is comfortable, durable and at a reasonable cost – is very exciting. Since I previously worked for a Western clothing company, and my husband and I have a ranch and compete competitively with our horses in team roping and sorting, a position with H.H. Brown’s Western division was a perfect match for my lifestyle. When I was asked to become part of the Sonora team I was so honored. It did not take long for me to set the goals I wanted to accomplish for myself and this brand, and I felt very connected to it before we even started our first design. I believe a lot of it was the encouragement of the ‘can-do’ spirit from the management to an equally driven group of ‘can-do’ employees. Watching the members of the team articulate their vision for the brand and incorporating our various ideas and opinions was such a meaningful process. Coming together to review colors and leathers, and decide on toe styles, tall and short boot designs, and what looks will work best in each geographic area of the country has been exciting, all while watching our professional relationships develop and grow.

As a team, one of our objectives was comfort – creating what we call the Oasis Comfort System.  It is one of the best systems being offered in ladies’ footwear and is rapidly being recognized in the market for its innovative technology. There are three comments from customers I hear over and over about Sonora boots and shoes: “What a great price” “They are so comfortable” and “How cute”. Seeing our collective work translate into a product loved by women who know authentic Western style is a great accomplishment and I’m proud to be a part of it. The honor to have the opportunity to present Sonora to the customers, to be asked my opinion to help further the growth of a brand I believe in, and all the time love what I’m doing – it doesn’t get any better than that.

With an active lifestyle and demanding physical job, I wanted footwear that was extremely comfortable AND had a stylish flair. Sonora brings this new fashionable twist to comfort.  On a daily basis, people in and around the Windy City stop me on the street, in restaurants and in my travels to inquire who makes the boots I am wearing!  My history in footwear (from kids’ and women’s to work and military) makes it exciting and inspiring to be able to share the comfort Sonora offers not only with retailers, but with potential consumers as well. The stylish look speaks for itself.

Beautiful, interesting, unique, intriguing and unexpected are among the words that can be used when you first see a pair of Sonoras. These words can also be used to describe the women behind this brand. The identity of the brand derives from the women who have helped to bring Sonora to life. Smart, innovative, silly and fun are additional words that can also describe these women. I was fortunate to be invited to be a part of this company, “built by women for women” – being a part of something that you can see evolve and grow is an exciting process. It is wonderful to be able to share ideas and brainstorm with a passionate team of people who are equally excited about what this brand could become. Sonora is made of beautiful leathers, textures and colors. But there is more to it than its appearance, much like the women who are behind it.

My career has involved retail management and wholesale with fashion brands. When I was first approached to join H.H. Brown’s Carolina Shoe company, I was intrigued as this was a work boot brand. The customer needed our boots to keep their feet as safe as possible. I wanted to learn more, as this was a far cry from fashion. But I wondered, “Could I do this, could I sell this type of footwear?” The one thing that really made an impression on me was being told “You should work with us because you are uncomfortable, it won’t be easy and it will be challenging.” I studied, I worked with the accounts and met the customers and became comfortable. I have been blessed to work with dynamic people who work together to be sure we are all successful. You are challenged daily but also given opportunities that you normally would not be privy to. I now have the opportunity to also be a part of the Sonora team. A team of people who will be on each other’s side and whose goal is to bring this brand to the forefront and make it something truly special.

I grew up in the Western industry. My parents have been buyers for a Western chain since I can remember, and I always swore I would not end up in the same industry as them, just to do something different. I decided to go to college to earn my EMT certifications and volunteer at a local fire department. I thought this was my calling, but that soon changed when I got a position with H.H. Brown. I spent my first year and a half working as a representative for Double-H Boots. This allowed me the freedom to plan my own trips, train employees on our product and set up displays in the stores. However, being on the road week after week, I needed a change, and a new challenge. That challenge came along at the perfect time when the opportunity arose to be part of the company’s new Sonora team. This is a team with a great dynamic, focus and ambition. We want Sonora to be the best it can be, and we strive every day to make that happen. I am extremely fortunate to work for such a great company with such a great future ahead of them, and I can’t wait to see where that takes me.

I worked 18 years in the golf industry as a PGA golf professional. It was a very fun, challenging, and rewarding time in my life. In that industry I had to wear many hats, as the manager of golf shop operations, a buyer, teacher, mentor, player, tournament coordinator, and above all else a great customer service ambassador. In that time I worked at both high-end private and public facilities. The diversity and experience I gained in the golf industry helped me grow personally and professionally. But, I was a country boy at heart, born in a small town in Texas, and I wanted to get back to my roots. An opportunity surfaced for me with Double-H Boot Co., and before long I became a sales executive for Double-H and Sonora. The transition from “country club cowboy” to working in the Western industry was so smooth. Now golf has become a hobby, and my passion is having a great career in the Western industry, and being a part of an amazing team of professionals at Sonora. In such a short time, the Sonora brand has grown and evolved into a versatile boot company. With a variety of styles and fashions to fit women with tastes in both Western and urban styling, Sonora offers a fresh, clean, refined-yet-trendy approach to our customers’ footwear needs. We have created a brand that is simple, but offers versatile styles with soft color and meticulous detailing to give the customer footwear that can be worn with many types of apparel, instead of the “one outfit” choices you often see with other brands. It’s so much fun selling something that you love and having confidence in the quality and true craftsmanship of the product. Quality, comfort, and competitive pricing…that’s what Sonora is about, and that’s why I’m excited to be a part of such a great team.

Being a part of the Sonora team during its debut to the e-commerce world has been exciting and inspiring. I have had the opportunity to see a great brand evolve into a leader of comfort fashion footwear.  Whether it’s an Urban or Western inspired style, the boots continue to stay trend-worthy and practical. The Sonora Boutique is not just a website, it is a community, a family. The people behind the brand have put their all into it and really believe in its success and value.  I’ve really enjoyed working with the sales and marketing team on its concept and design. I’m excited to see it grow!

Skincare Products Creator

I am a self-driven, creative beauty entrepreneur with an interest in fulfilling my clients’ health and beauty needs, but without a doubt, my interest in natural hand-crafted beauty products started at home with taking care of my family. I have a daughter with sensitive skin and a son with dry skin and tried many commercial skincare products for them. After not getting the desired results from anything I purchased on the market, I decided to create my own skincare products right from my kitchen. After successfully making glycerin soap bars that yielded no reactions or redness, I decided to share my creation with others and began to create a product line of body scrubs, shave bars, lotion, lip moisture, makeup, etc. I realized that not only were these healthy and gentle for my family, but the most natural product I can provide for my customers as well. I started selling it from my hair salon, the nursing home where I do hair styling, online, and to some friends. All the while giving away samples to people for whom I have much admiration. Sharon from Sonora is one of those people! She then introduced the products to Timberli. That was when I was given an order from Sonora! Suddenly the soaps and scrubs were in such high demand! I am so pleased to be able to offer these high-quality products through Sonora – natural, hand-crafted products for everyone to enjoy.

My journey with Sonora started when I was hired as their model for the WESA show in Denver as well as for multiple FFANY shows in New York. I am a big country music fan, so I was naturally drawn to their cowboy boots. I soon learned they are so much more than that.

I had the pleasure of getting to know each of the wonderful employees that have worked so hard to create the Sonora brand. They are all so genuine, hard working, and kind. Everyone was open to my suggestions and feedback about the shoes. I always felt respected and that my opinion mattered. After working with the brand many times, I proudly say that I consider Sonora an extension of my family.

The boots are the most comfortable and fashionable shoes I have ever worn and owned! I’ve worn my shoes to concerts, to dinners, and even to sporting events. What I love the most is that Sonora appeals to all types of women and their apparel choices. Sonora’s variety of shoes takes you on a journey and allows you to experience country life, city life, and everything in between.

I have nothing but respect and gratitude for everyone who has made my experience with the brand a special one. To many more years of comfort and style!
