BTS - DIY Valentine’s Day Mani with Ally

One night a week I set some time aside to pamper myself, something every girl should do right? I light up the wood stove, a few candles, flip on my latest binge-worthy show on Netflix and have my weekly “Pinot and Polish” night. My favorite pooch, Moto, supervises and lends some moral support if I happen to smudge. A perk of doing your own Mani is that you can use all of those pennies you’re saving to treat yourself to those Gorgeous Boots you’ve had your eye on all month, because you’re worth it.

First thing’s first, the wine! I enjoy a nice red wine blend in the colder months. This evening’s choice is the delicious Apothic Red, which has hints of black cherry, vanilla and mocha (YUM??).

This week, I decided to go with a nail lacquer that would tie into the coming holiday, Valentine’s Day. Whether your valentine is someone special or just a furry friend, it’s fun to rock hot pink nails in the dead of Winter.

PolishSelects

This week’s polish selections:

▪ Polish: China Glaze // Shocking Pink

▪ Glitter: Essie // Set in Stones

▪ Top Coat: Seche Vite

Hand_before

Steps to get the best DIY Manicure (in my opinion):

1. Clean Slate: Be sure that any existing polish has been completely removed!

2. Nail Filing: If my nails aren’t too overgrown, I just take a nail file to them and give them my best attempt at at squarish shape, but that is your preference!

3. Buffing: I buff my nails with a super fine sanding block (that I also get from my local Sally Beauty).

Disclaimer: I do not do my own cuticles in fear of harming myself. I get a mani at a salon every once in a while just to clean them up.

4. On to the polish: I chose to do three (yes three!) coats of color. The polish I chose was quite thin, I put an extra coat on so it really POPPED!!

5. Accent Nails:  I chose to add a little sparkle to my week with an accent nail on each hand. Some people do the same nail on each hand. I like to switch it up a bit and did my pointer finger on my left hand and my pinky finger on my right!

6. Finishing up: The most important step of them all, the Top Coat! Which is pretty self explanatory.

Wishing you all a very Happy Valentine’s Day!

BTS - Behind The Scenes- Mexico Culture and Life

Recently our Brand Manager and Designers traveled to our Factory in Leon, Mexico. Leon is predominately known for their work in the footwear industry. Culture and terrain in Mexico is vastly different that that of the U.S. A laid back culture provides a pleasant and productive work environment. Work days start around 8:30 and end around 6 or 7. Families take a “lunch break” from 2-4, with their lunch-time meal being the biggest of the day and where the whole family sits down for a meal. School kids are home by 2:30, allowing them to join. After lunch, families have plenty of time to take a quick “siesta” (nap) before heading back to work.

Our lunch consisted of the following:
The restaurant was El Rincon Gaucho, or The Cowboy Corner, which is pretty appropriate for the Sonora team.

El Rincon Guacho
We had the very best Empanadas as an appetizer, and all agreed that we would be content with just them as our Entree’s!

Our designer would like to share her Grandmother’s recipe, which is close to what we had for Lunch, it’s Panamanian style though, so slightly different.

Empanadas Recipe:

2 boxes of pie crust
1 lb of ground beef
1 packet taco seasoning
1 bunch fresh cilantro
2 small onions, diced
Any hot peppers, diced (optional) Ketchup (optional)
Baking sheets

Making empanadas is a labor of love, so put on some music and give yourself lots of time.

First, put on an apron or some clothes you don’t mind covering in flour, then clean your counter and/or cover it in waxed paper or foil so you have a place to roll out the dough. Making empanadas can get messy!

Follow the directions on the boxes of pie crust and leave it in the bowl for now.

Preheat the oven to 350.

In a large skillet, add the onions and beef. Cook until the beef is brown. Add the hot peppers, if using, the taco seasoning, and cilantro. Turn the heat off and stir together.

Now this is the time consuming part: Roll out the dough to about 1/8” thick and use the lid of a pot (or other round object) to cut out a circle (Aprox 8” in diameter). Pick it up and put a scoop of beef filling in the center. Fold in half and use your fingers or a fork to press the edges. With the fork, prick the top of the empanada to allow steam to escape and place on an ungreased baking sheet. Repeat until all beef is gone.

Bake for about 10 minutes, or until golden brown on the edges.
Serve Hot!

Two of us split the Sabana de Filete, and Churrasco Martin Fierro.
Sabana de Filete was prepared with re-fried beans and cheese on top, and the Churrasco Martin Fierro was stuffed with cheese and garlic.
Both were very good, but we all agreed the Churrasco Martin Filete was the best!

Most of the main roads are cobblestone, yet very narrow to travel upon, while secondary roads are all dirt, with the lack of rain, provide a dry and dusty atmosphere. Public transit is heavily utilized, while the Volkswagen Beetle seems to be the most popular car to drive.

Our Team - Tracy, the Illinois Dog Lover

Hello all – Tracy here, one of the Sonora Sales Reps, but better known as an Illinois Dog Lover!

I have recently decided to foster a dog for PAWS, a no kill animal shelter in Chicago.  The shelter advertised that they needed foster parents for pets during the Holiday season with a 2 – 3 week commitment period.  When animals are fostered from PAWS, it frees up space for the organization to open their doors for animals who are in kill shelters.  The holiday season is especially important because adoptions decrease at kill shelters over the holidays.  By fostering, PAWS can bring in a pet in need and dogs that have been in the shelter for some time get a much needed break.  Fostering also gives the animal a higher chance of adoption because PAWS will now have some very positive history information to tell about the dog that will aid in adopting her out to a forever home.

All I had to do was fill out paperwork, do some interviews and met with dogs to be OK’ed as a foster dog parent.  Two hours later I brought Homera home.  She is a very sweet and loving 5 year old border collie lab mix.  She is starting to settle down as she adjusts to her new surroundings.  We are focusing on learning new commands and being better on a leash!

If you’re looking to Foster or better yet Rescue an animal, click here to see a list of all rescues by state!

Below is her funny up close nose picture as well as her settling into office time:

BTS - Jessi at the Grand Canyon

We were looking for new business and decided to check out what the tourists shops at the Grand Canyon had to offer.  While we were there, it was just an impromptu photo shoot with an iPhone.  We didn’t plan it, we just happened to be wearing the jewelry at the time!

We were just two girls having a moment of fun, with the best landscape you could ever ask for!  Anything looks good with a backdrop like that! A lot of tourist stopped and asked what we were doing there, and complimented us on our boots.

The JESSI is paired with a Brighton necklace and cuff, purchased at Eli’s Western Wear in Okeechobee, FL, and the ring is OrPaz, from QVC.
